Data protection

Why recycle with a NAID AAA certified company

Used cell phones often still hold customer accounts, photos, messages, contacts, payment apps, and saved passwords. When a repair shop or retailer ships devices to a recycler, that data goes with them unless it is properly erased or destroyed.

What NAID AAA certification means

According to i-SIGMA (the organization that runs the NAID AAA program), NAID AAA Certification is an audit-based credential for secure information destruction providers. Certified companies must meet operational standards covering areas such as chain of custody, facility and transport security, employee screening, and destruction methods. Certification involves scheduled audits and can include unannounced audits, so providers are expected to stay compliant year-round—not only for a one-time review.

i-SIGMA describes NAID AAA as independent, third-party verification that a destruction provider’s practices meet strict security requirements. Many organizations use certified vendors as part of their due diligence when choosing who handles discarded media that may contain sensitive information.

Risks of sending cell phones to an uncertified recycler

Data exposure

If storage is not wiped or destroyed, leftover customer data can be recovered and misused.

Liability & trust

A breach tied to devices that left your shop can damage customer trust and create costly follow-up for your business.

How SP Recycling handles data

SP Recycling is NAID AAA certified. Data on devices we receive is erased or destroyed at our facility in Ocala, Florida. Choosing a certified recycler helps you show customers that end-of-life cell phones are handled with serious data protection in mind.

Bad and blacklisted IMEI cell phones

Repair shops often end up with cell phones that have a bad or blacklisted IMEI—devices reported lost or stolen, or carrying an unpaid balance that keeps them off a carrier network. Those cell phones usually cannot be sold as working handsets.

SP Recycling accepts bad and blacklisted IMEI cell phones for recycling and destruction so they do not go back into circulation as working devices. Pack them with your other scrap; tell us roughly how many you have when you request a label.
